As a student at GIUB, you can of course not only get involved in the Student Council, but also in other student initiatives. We have briefly outlined these on this page.

Cafete (room U.035 in the basement)

The Cafete (cafeteria) is located in the basement of GIUB and is a popular meeting place for all geographers. It is organized and run by students. In addition to socializing, you can also get coffee, tea, lemonade, sandwiches, waffles, etc.!

If you can make coffee, do the dishes and make sandwiches, you have the opportunity to earn a little money and work in the Cafete team. The shift allocation, where first-year students are also very welcome, usually takes place at the beginning of the semester in the Cafete. After normal opening hours, the Cafete can be used as a group study room.

Opening hours:
Mon.-Thurs., 9am – 4pm
Fri. 9 am – 2pm

EGEA

EGEA stands for European Geography Association – for Students and Young Geographers. If you want to get to know other countries, cultures and geographers, learn new things as part of a team and celebrate together, then EGEA is the right place for you!

EGEA is a European network that organizes congresses, exchanges, seminars, excursions and many other events and partnerships. The initiative thrives on active and motivated members who are keen to travel, meet new people and get involved.

GeoDACH

GeoDACH e.V. is the non-profit umbrella organization of all German-speaking geography students. It has represented all student representatives in German-speaking countries (Germany, Austria and Switzerland) since September 2007. It sees itself as a networking body for Geography students.

The association’s tasks include critically examining and analyzing teaching at universities, advising student councils on their (university policy) activities and representing students in the form of resolutions, position papers, and press releases. GeoDACH consists of representatives of the Student Councils of participating universities and is active in the German Society for Geography (DGfG) with two board members. The association also sends experts to the student accreditation pool and thus actively contributes to the improvement of teaching.

Twice a year, GeoDACH organizes a so-called Federal Student Council Conference (BuFaTa), where most German-speaking Geography Student Councils meet.

AK KritGeo

The AK KritGeo (Working Group Critical Geographies) is made up of committed students who want to discuss political and socially critical topics. For example, this working group has initiated a debate on the colonial history of GIUB around Carl Troll.

The AK meets on Thursdays at 6pm in the Cafete.

AK FemGeo

The AK FemGeo (Working Group Feminist Geographies) also consists of committed students who deal with feminist issues and regularly organize events.
